Shop Seattle Gems Beacon Hill—A Pop-up
Event for the Beacon Hill Community!

We’ve got a treat in store next month for Beacon Hill businesses and patrons alike. As a part of the nationwide Small Business Saturday campaign and in partnership with Seattle’s Office of Economic Development (OED) and American Express, we’re planning an afternoon event in the north Beacon Hill business district Saturday, November 24.

On November 1, OED will announce the Shop Seattle Gems theme for this year’s Shop Small campaign leading up to the Small Business Saturday activation event, hosted in Beacon Hill.

Shop Small is an opportunity to celebrate Seattle’s Small Businesses!

We’ll be curating local artisan and food vendors as well as live-painting artists to bring you a fun and creative gift shopping experience with activities, music, and more.

We’ll roll out a full schedule of activities and participants soon. Meanwhile, if  you are interested in one of the vendor spots or want to help out during the event, please contact us at info@beaconhillmerchants.com.

Ch-Ch-Changes, Plus—Our Biggest Events of the Year!

We’re buzzing with excitement as we gear up for a season of change and holiday events we can’t wait to share with the Beacon Hill business community and community at large. As the gorgeous and ample foliage of Beacon Hill transforms from rich green to sunny yellow, neon orange, and deep maroon, the Beacon Hill Merchants Association (BHMA) too will emerge with a new look—and a new name!

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to get to the heart of our work and how best to serve our beloved Beacon Hill. We’re beyond excited to share these changes with you in the coming weeks.

Now, mark your calendars—We’re planning two of our biggest events of the year! Shop Seattle Gems is coming up on Saturday November 24. So plan for fun-filled affair on Beacon Hill on Thanksgiving weekend!

Our BHMA Annual Rendezvous is also fast-approaching. We’re planning an evening to remember on Saturday, December 15, so mark your calendars. We look forward to sharing all the event details with you! This season is shaping up to be chock-full of merriment, and we get to share it with the best community ever. Lucky us!

Keep an eye out as our new name and new look start to show up in conjunction with upcoming events, emails, in your social media feed, and more.

The Garland Project is Coming Your Way!

Wrap your business in a wreath of evergreen. The weekend following Thanksgiving,
our amazing volunteers, Robert Hinrix, Craig Lorch, and others will install your
garland and deliver your wreath. What’s more, at the end of the holiday season
we’ll also retrieve the garlands and do the labor to prep them for composting.
Let’s make this year the most festive on Beacon Hill yet!
Give us a shout to let us know you want to participate—call or email us:

Save Garden House Update

Garden House was sold on 10/10/18! The buyers are a local family and they don’t
intend to develop the property. That’s the good news. Unfortunately for community
pushing for an established hyper-local nonprofit to purchase the property,
that’s not the outcome here, but it doesn’t necessarily mean Beacon Hill won’t be
enriched by the new habitants and their business plans—we shall see!
After a successful Dine Out to Save Garden House (the event raised $2,400! Go community!),
Save Garden House filed for Landmark Status ahead of schedule with the news of
imminent ownership change. Stay tuned for more updates.

Welcome Sustainable Seattle!

Sustainable Seattle creates urban green spaces and so much more and now
has a Beacon Hill location. We’re proud to call them our newest Organizational Partner!
Keep an eye out for more info on Sustainable Seattle and our partnership with them

to enrich the Beacon Hill community with their amazing work.

The Rumors are True—La Esperanza Tienda is Moving

We spoke with Omar Santacruz, owner of La Esperanza de Seattle tienda
at 2505 Beacon Ave S., about plans to move the store across the street to
the former home of Beacon Hill Market at 2500 S. Bayview St. La Esperanza
will open its doors in the new space any day now! La Esperanza sister business,
Carnitas Michoacan, restaurant and carniciera, will also make the move in
the coming months and the two will share the larger space. Omar said he’s
seeking guidance from the former tenants on what items would be most beneficial
to keep stocked for the Asian community. He recognizes that the closure of the
Asian market is a loss to the community who relied on the market for unique goods

unavailable near their homes.

Perihelion Is Growing in
Size and Cultural Scope

Perihelion Brewery has been busy building out what will be a sizable
expansion of their space from it’s narrow, L-shaped side-street spot to
a corner storefront that wraps around Beacon Ave S. The expanded space
is expected to be finished this fall, so there’ll be plenty of space for
patrons to enjoy the many upcoming live performances on their calendar,
which include a wide variety of musical acts in styles from swing jazz to
Latin/world music. This spot is emerging as a family-friendly public house

that represents the multicultural community it serves.

Coming Soon: Nikos Gyros!

With the recent closure of Café Bengodi, a new restaurant will open
its doors on 1636 S. McClellan St. in the former space occupied by
the cafe (just east of Fresh Flours). Word on the street is: it’s going to be a
gyros shop! Stay tuned as we learn more about Nikos Gyros and their
new location on Beacon Hill.
